presentation to College for Kids
Prof Shakhashiri demonstrates the combustion of hydrogen.
Prof Shakhashiri sprays metal salts into a flame to produce colors,
similar to the way in which fireworks are colored.
The crowd reacts as Prof Shakhashiri puts dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) into cylinders
containing an acid base indicator. As the carbon dioxide dissolves in the water,
it forms carbonic acid, changing the acidity of the liquid.
Prof Shakhashiri demonstrates
another property of dry ice. Its extremely cold temperature
(-78 C) causes water vapor to condense forming a large plume of fog.
The crowd reacts to experiments.
